Holiday market at the CNY Regional Market

Syracuse, N.Y. — It’s not too late, yet.

If you’re trying to cram in some last-minute Christmas shopping, but desperate to avoid the mayhem of the mall, you’ll find all sorts of treasures Thursday at the Regional Market.

The market is hosting a flea and farmer’s market today until 6 p.m. in the E and F Sheds. They’ve got meats, fish, veggies, local wines and liquors, and a huge assortment of locally made artisan goods from cutting boards and candles to winter weather gear, pet treats and home decor.

If you want to go, though, you’d better hurry. The market is open until 6 p.m. today, and some of the best stuff tends to go quick. Bring a mask if you plan to shop there. The market can be found at 2100 Park St. and there’s plenty of parking on site.

We went early Thursday to see what last-minute gifts we could find for under $50. Here’s a sampling of some of what we found:

Hall Island spirits at the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

Triple E Vodka w/ 2 rock glasses ($36)

Hall Island in the F Shed offers three kinds of locally distilled, corn-based liquor: Foxtail Whiskey, Wetland Whiskey, and their award-winning Triple E Vodka. The bottles are $30 apiece or two for $55. But the best gift deal is a bottle of your choice with two nice rock glasses for $36.

The best part? Free samples from owner Ann Benton, who offers thimble-sized nips of each of her products.

A baby Yoda mug with candle from the Decaf Candles booth the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

The candles are all hand made by Amanda Hence of Syracuse, who uses all natural soy wax and coffee mugs for her “Decaf Candles” in the E Shed. When the candle is finished, you’re left with the mug.

Most of the candles come with a lid. They range from Christmas-themed mugs to pop culture stuff like a Rick and Morty mug. The candles range in price from $22.99 to $44.99.

The “Hey Rose” booth’s top seller, Honey Chipotle, at the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

“Paw patrol” pet stocking stuffer ($5)

Maureen Doyle and Barb Janice have been selling their natural pet treats and herbs and spices at the regional market for about 14 years at their combined shop, Hey Rose in the E Shed. They’ve got several tables chock full of great stocking stuffers for your family members (or their pets).

For $20, you can load up on pet treats like a $2 sweet potato dog chew, a $5 “paw patrol” cream to protect you animal’s feet or “barker loungers” dog treat cookies: 2 small ones for $3.50 or $4 for a large one. Barb noted that people can eat those cookies too -- a kid recently started munching on one at the market.

On the herbs and spices side, the best-seller is the honey chipotle rub, which goes great on anything from meat to popcorn. Barb said she wants to write a book some day: 101 ways to use the honey chipotle. She’s got more than enough.

The Claddagh Alpaca Farm booth at the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

Alpaca fiber is an “elite fiber” on par with cashmere, according to Sarah Lamanna of Claddagh Farm Alpacas in the E Shed. It’s smoother and lighter than something like wool and there’s no lanolin. So it’ll stay soft and warm for a long time.

Lamanna sells everything from lined alpaca mittens ($32) to heavy socks ($25) to crew socks ($15) mugs, prints and keychains featuring the goofy-looking animals.

Sunswick Farms honey at the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

Assorted natural honey jars (4 for $15)

Brooks Mulcahy harvests the honey and her daughter, Molly, is her cheerful, outgoing sales expert. The mother-daughter pair have a prominent spot in the center of the F Shed where they sell all things honey from their Sunswick Farms booth.

“It’s the perfect stocking stuffer!” Molly said, pointing to a stack of 4-oz. honey jars. Each is a different flavor. They’re $4 apiece or four for $15.

They’ve also got a $15 lip balm kit made from all natural honey, or varying size jars, up to a hulking $35 tub of honey that would make Winnie the Pooh blush.

Fresh local meat from the Shults Family Farm at the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

Trying to avoid Wegmans before your Christmas Eve dinner? Shults Family Farm in the F Shed has steaks, pork, chicken and milk and cheese, fresh from the farm.

Their rib eye is the best-seller, said Matt Shults. It goes for $17.99 per pound. For $7.99 per pound you can get their ground beef.

And if you’re looking for sides, vendors throughout the F Shed offer fresh fruits, vegetables and even specialty mushrooms.

Salmon from the “Market Seafood” booth at the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

If you haven’t stocked up yet on your Christmas Eve fishes, Market Seafood in the F Shed offers fresh catches.

They’ve got raw oysters for $1.50 apiece, some massive shrimp for TK, wild grouper for $19.99 per pound and their best seller: The king salmon at $15.99 a pound. On a good day, they’ll offload 100lbs of the salmon.

Knickerbocker Artisans offerings at the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

Knickerbocker Artisans out of Marathon has a mix of hand-made rustic Christmas decor. The wooden decorations are handmade from pallet wood. They have holiday signs ranging from $20 to $35 dollars, and the decorative toboggans are mostly either $45 or $50.

Our favorite? A $25 two-foot wooden statue of Dr. Seuss’s notoriously cranky green monster. Knickerbocker also sells giant dog bones for $10 apiece for the family pet.

Happy Jacks Maple Products gift box at the Holiday Market at the CNY Regional Market, Syracuse, N.Y. Thursday December 23, 2021 Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com

Jumbo maple syrup gift box ($50)

Happy Jack’s Maple in the F Shed sells a variety of syrups and other maple products. The best bang for your buck is the $50 jumbo gift box, which comes with a package of New Hope Mills pancake mix, bottles of regular maple syrup and bourbon barrel syrup and two jars of maple cream.

Don’t want the whole kit? Butch Powers, whose son Jack started Happy Jack’s, said the top-seller is the bourbon barrel maple syrup, which goes for $20 a bottle.
