Another space shuttle model is on display at the Lincoln County Courthouse for visitors to see.

The display - which is dedicated to Sally Ride, the first American woman in space – is another creation by John B. Adams.

Adams, who created “Moments to Remember in Space Flight Miniatures,” is a Lincoln Countian who enjoys sharing his interest and knowledge of the space program with the young and old. He is a retired electrician, and his models include the “Space Shuttle Vehicle Assembly Building,” “First Lunar Landing” and more. Throughout the past 10 years, Adams has built eight space-related models.

A model containing the Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttles was on display prior to the newest exhibit featuring Sally Ride.

Adams spends several months creating the models and decided on the Sally Ride model because he wanted to celebrate women in space.

On June 18, 1983, NASA Astronaut Sally K. Ride became the first American woman in space, when she launched with four crewmates aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on mission STS-7. Ride and five other women had been selected in 1978 for NASA Astronaut Group 8, the first American selection class to include females. Her six-day mission in space is considered by NASA to be the most complex in the space shuttle program to date. The crew launched two commercial communications satellites and Ride used the Shuttle’s robotic arm to deploy the first Shuttle Pallet Satellite, which she retrieved two days later. It was the first time the Shuttle was used to return a spacecraft to Earth. She is considered a trailblazer for women.

Adams likes to use his hobby to share this and similar history of space travel. He said the model will remain on display outside the mayor’s office for six months.

Adams said he is thankful for his adopted NASA family who help with his research. “Without their help, it wouldn’t be possible,” Adams said.

Mayor Bill Newman said many of the courthouse staff and visitors have stopped to see Adams’ displays in the past. “Your display is very attention getting,” the mayor said in a letter to Adams about his models of the Columbia and Challenger. “We have received numerous compliments of all ages.”

Newman also thanked Adams for sharing his interest and knowledge with so many Lincoln County students. “You are to be commended for the work you do,” he said.

Adams has exhibits available for schools and businesses who are interested in displaying the models. He plans to work on a model of the Challenger next and hopes to display it at Redstone Federal Credit Union in Fayetteville.

“I’m just happy with what I’m doing,” Adams said, joking, “It keeps me out of trouble.”
