The final episode of “The Wendy Williams Show” premiered Friday without its eponymous host, who has been absent from the program since July. Williams previously vowed to return before the series wrapped, but her plan didn’t pan out.

Included in the finale was a video tribute to Williams, who helmed “The Wendy Williams Show” for 12 seasons before exiting the syndicated daytime series for health reasons. The host of Friday’s episode was Sherri Shepherd, who is slated to take over Williams’ time slot with her own talk show this fall.

Willson Contreras had three hits and stole a base in his first game against younger brother William, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3. Chicago won a day after ending its 10-game losing streak and also stopping the Braves’ 14-game winning string. The Contreras brothers both started at catcher, marking the first time they shared a field. They hugged before the 30-year-old Willson, a two-time All-Star, singled in the first inning. Contreras then stole second base against his brother, and scored on Jonathan Villar’s two-run single. Willson Contreras later doubled and drove in a run. His 24-year-old brother had two hits for the Braves.

Justin Thomas wanted to honor the spirit of the game. His reward was a chunky wedge from a bad lie and a big fat bogey on the scorecard. The PGA champion’s drive on the fourth hole at The Country Club on Saturday came to rest awkwardly beside a drain in the fairway. Thomas asked for a ruling, but confessed to the official that the drain didn’t interfere with his swing. That honesty cost him a chance at relief. Thomas had to reach over the drain and bend down to make contact for a shot into a bunker short of the green.

Taijuan Walker retired 18 in a row and pitched into the seventh inning, Francisco Lindor homered for the second straight game and the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 3-2. The Mets have won three straight and five of six, earning their NL-best 44th victory and improving to a season-high 21 games over .500. Walker pitched one-run ball and struck out nine over 6 2/3 innings in front of a large crowd on an unseasonably cool and breezy day. Jon Berti singled to lead off the game and stole a base in each of the next two at-bats, but the speedster was stranded as the right-hander fanned the side.

Defending champion Nelly Korda made a 22-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th for a 6-under 66 and the third-round lead in the LPGA Meijer Classic, with six majors champions topping the leaderboard. Making her second start since returning from a four-month break because of a blood clot in her left arm, Korda also eagled the par-5 eighth. She was at 18-under 198 at Blythefield Country Club. Jennifer Kupcho was a stroke back after 69. She rebounded from her first bogey of the week with a birdie on 18. Brooke Henderson, the winner Sunday in New Jersey and 2017 and 2019 champion at Blythefield, was 15 under after a 67. Lexi Thompson, the 2015 winner, had a 68 to get to 14 under.

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Jack Johnson played in 1,000 NHL games before making his first Stanley Cup Final. It took him that long to steadily chip away at his college degree as well. Johnson finished his general studies degree from the University of Michigan this spring. By doing so he fulfilled a promise not only to himself but his college coach, Red Berenson. Johnson said he gradually worked on his degree over the years by taking classes in the spring when his team didn’t make the postseason. He said his hardest class was statistics.

TAMPA, Fla. — Florida voters won’t have a say in more than a quarter of state legislative races after Friday’s qualifying deadline expired with no apparent opposition filed in 45 House and Senate seats where a Democrat or Republican failed to draw a challenger.

Australia welcomed reassurances from the Solomon Islands that it would not allow China to install a military base on its territory, helping to assuage concerns about Beijing’s growing influence in the Pacific region.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — As Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick began self-funding her successful 2021 congressional campaign, the company where she was CEO at the time started receiving a new source of income: providing COVID vaccines in underserved communities.

HOUSTON — Even with the specter of a Nov. 8 general election with more moderate voters, Republican Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan is strident in his support of the rash of conservative legislation approved by lawmakers last year and signed by Gov. Greg Abbott.

Cleveland third baseman José Ramírez is out of the lineup for a game at Dodger Stadium because of a sore right thumb. It is the first game he has missed this season. Manager Terry Francona said Ramírez jammed the thumb during a swing about 10 days ago and then aggravated it during the Guardians’ recent series in Colorado. Ramírez will have it checked out again Sunday before Cleveland travels to Minnesota to begin a three-game series on Tuesday. Ramírez has an eight-game hitting streak and leads the American League with 62 RBIs. He is tied with Boston’s Rafael Devers with 40 extra-base hits.

Jameson Taillon and two relievers combined on a five-hitter, Aaron Hicks lined a three-run double and the New York Yankees extended their winning streak to nine by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0. Taillon allowed four hits and struck out eight in 5 2-3 innings to win his eighth straight decision. New York’s shutout was its 11th of 2022.

NEW YORK — A Belgian firefighter taking a ride on an FDNY fire boat was killed when another boat slammed into the ship, FDNY officials said Saturday.

LONDON — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the West must continue to support the Ukrainians as they seek to recover territory seized by Russia, saying it would a "catastrophe" if Russian President Vladimir Putin was able to claim victory.

Indiana Secretary of State Holli Sullivan has failed to get the Republican Party’s nomination to run in the fall election. GOP delegates on Saturday instead nominated Diego Morales, who worked in the governor’s office when Mike Pence led the state. Morales overcame criticism about twice leaving jobs in the secretary of state office after being written up for poor job performance. Morales has called for more voting restrictions and embraced former President Donald Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen. Sullivan was appointed secretary of state in March 2021 by Gov. Eric Holcomb after her predecessor retired. The Democratic nominee for secretary of state is Destiny Scott Wells, an Indianapolis attorney and Army Reserve intelligence officer.

Ryan Zimmerman has become the first player for the Washington Nationals to have his jersey number retired by the club. Zimmerman was honored during an on-field pregame ceremony Saturday before Washington hosted the Philadelphia Phillies. Zimmerman was the first player ever drafted by the new-to-town Nationals in 2005 and made his major league debut later that season. He played his final game in 2021. Zimmerman owns most major offensive career records for the franchise and helped the team win the 2019 World Series. Several former teammates were on hand to help celebrate the occasion.

She was unchallenged at Stade Charlety as she matched her time at the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya last month. The 35-year-old Fraser-Pryce will go for a 10th world championship gold medal in Eugene, Oregon, next month. Winfred Yavi of Bahrain triumphed in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase in a world-leading and personal best time.
